Age UK seeking volunteers to support older people staying in hospital over the winter months
This message is sent on behalf of Age UK Berkshire.
Winter can be a lonely time for older people, and it’s even worse when you’re stuck in hospital without regular visitors.
Age UK Berkshire are running a new pilot service to support older people staying in hospital during the winter months. This will be a short term, 3-month pilot, working with the Royal Berkshire Hospital from Jan-March 2019, to offer companionship and help to patients in need.
We’re looking for volunteers who would be able to spare 2-3 hours a week during Jan-March, preferably in the afternoon or early evening, to visit patients identified by Royal Berks staff as requiring support, mainly in their three older people’s wards.
This is an exciting new project which will make a big difference to older people in Berkshire and will also help the NHS to manage their winter caseload more effectively.
The training needed for this role will be slightly different to the usual – it is specified by the Royal Berks and will include online courses and self study – and we are hoping to have a get-together at some point for all volunteers to meet up and share their knowledge and experiences.
